Paul Menigoz's Gran Fondo Report: 6000+ Riders
What an awesome ride.  This was by far the largest ride I've done (6000+ riders).  I did the 103 mile route with 8500 ft of climbing, and completed it in about 10hrs, with 8-1/2 hours of actual moving time.  From where I lined up at the start, it took over 15 minutes just to get to the starting line, and the announcer was announcing that Levi and the other lead riders were already at about mile 10.  In addition to the beauty of the route, this was also the best supported ride I've participated in.  There were so many SAG vehicles and other support, including 8 very well stocked rest stops.  There were several significant climbs, each with 15-18% grades - I had to walk up the steepest ones.  On one of the steep descents (around mile 63), my brother blew out his rear tire.  Within a minute or so, we had a support vehicle there and they had a replacement tire for him.  We were back on the road in less time than a normal roadside flat repair, as they also had a nice floor pump.  Other noteworthy observations were a blind rider and a rider missing a crank arm.  I saw the blind gentleman at one of the rest stops all dressed out in cycling gear and wondered how that would work.  He passed me a short while later as the stoker on a tandem with a lady captain, very cool. The single crank arm was similarly impressive.  We were coming up on a young lady that appeared to only be pedaling with her right leg at around mile 83.  She had lost a crank arm somehow but was absolutely determined to finish, and she did - 20 more miles, and I have no idea how many miles she had ridden like that before we came up on her.  I witnessed her telling the SAG to go help someone who needed it and that she was going to finish just fine.  I guess I should admit that it took a good effort to actually catch her, that she didn't stop at the last rest stop and finished ahead of me.  In addition to all the good stuff, there were also some disappointments.  With that much traffic there were bound to be some spills and there were, with numerous riders being carted off in ambulances, and many more getting SAGed in for equipment or other issues.  I also saw more flat repairs than ever, which is probably normal since we collectively rode nearly 500K miles that day.

Here's a link to the data from my Garmin:

 ===========

Steve LaChaine's Wine and Roses Report  I got to the finish at 2:00pm exactly.  I rode 11 miles to the start, roll out at 8:45am, then 12 miles to rest stop 1, then a 2 mile detour in Creston to get my cell phone, then back to rest stop 1 and wait 15 minutes for Devin to meet me, then 229, hwy 58, O'Donavon Rd, super nice day, then back to Rest stop 1, just water as Gatorade was all gone.  That was another issue starting late: all the thirsty out of shape riders were drinking all the Gatorade.  Then off to Peachy Canyon, not use to riding on water and cookies so I am hurting a little on the Peachy hill, cheese sandwich in my pocket does not sound tasty right now.  Finally the descend back to Paso Robles I realize I have only 10 miles to the BBQ at the winery so I push harder and make Devin work for 10 miles.  I go to eat and he goes home.  By now my face is a mat of salt as the Basque food I ate last night is taking it's toll.  I have not had this much difficulty on a ride under 100 miles since the Spring.  Mile 90 the BBQ is cold food and dry chicken but I can eat at least half of it.  I talk to the only people I know Rick and Linda Hicks as they did the 50 miles.  The soda was all gone but as I was ready to leave for my 11 mile ride home some sodas showed up and I got one for the road.  I suffered until half way on Rocky Canyon when the caffeine started to kick in and I actually felt good the last 4 miles to my house.  I think all of that 3000 calorie dinner from the night before finally had run it's course. I give this ride a 10 for the course and course markings and a 7 for food.  Overall good experience, I just don't run that well on Gatorade and water.

Bike - Saturday, October 9, 8:00 a.m. : Wear K Gear if you have it!!! Celebrate K-mania. May be photo opportunities.
Let’s ride Geneseo, Union, Estrella and Ranchita Canyon Roads to San Miguel, where we will hoist some of the world’s best burritos in celebration of Terry’s victory in the 508.

---We will leave K-Man Cycle and Run at or about 8:00 a.m. We will head out left on El Camino, to right on Curbaril, left on Santa Ysabel, right on Highway 41, left on Homestead, right on South El Pomar, right on Creston, left on Geneseo, continuing right to Union. Then it is right on Union and straight all the way to Highway 46Right on 46 and carefully left on Estrella. We will then follow Estrella through various twists and turns to Ranchita Canyon where we turn right. We stay on Ranchita Canyon road to Cross Canyon, and turn left there, following Cross Canyon to San Miguel, where we will get to savor the burritos. We can then decide whether to return on the east side of the Freeway, by way of Hog Canyon, River Road, etc., or on the west side of 101, by way of San Marcos Road and the wine country.  See you Saturday.

Also.....Check out this experimental link for North County Cycling News.
And........The L’Eroica classic bicycling event held last weekend. A YouTube video depicting the event can be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lo-8wiJSks&feature=player_embedded#

Now in its 14th year, the race draws riders from around the world, ranging in age from 15 to 90, with the occasional world champion like Francesco Moser joining in. Riders can choose routes to match their abilities; the shortest is 24 miles long, the longest 127 miles.
The only requirements are a vintage bike, vintage clothing and, it would appear, a healthy appetite. Because there are no time trials, stopping for a sandwich and a glass of Chianti is perfectly acceptable.

Team K-Man News October 1, 2010

Linda (Somers) Smith spoke at our team socials a couple of times. You might remember her as the Olympic marathoner who drinks diet Coke in the morning before a marathon. She is a good friend of mine. If you were at the Heritage Oaks Family Fun Day you might have seen her win the women's division (and beat most of the guys) and have the fastest "age graded" time. Well, we just found out that she ran a "World Record" time for women over 45 years of age (she is 49). WOW! AWESOME!

************************

Saturday’s Team K-Man ride.

Meanwhile, I am sure that I speak for all of us in wishing Terry Lentz (and others) the best of luck in taking on the Furnace Creek 508 on his personally built classic bike. It is a formidable challenge, which makes it well-suited to Terry’s formidable talents.

Go get ‘em, Terry, Steve, Mike and others!

Len

We will meet at 8:00 a.m. at K-Man Cycle & Run. We will go south on El Camino Real to Viejo Camino where we turn left. We will then turn left at Santa Barbara, riding out and around past Grandpa’s Pond to Sandoval and then back out to El Camino Real, where we turn left and head south again. At Highway 58 we turn left and follow 58 out toHighway 229, where will go left again. We will then do the climb and descend down into Creston, where there will be a regrouping stop. From there we go north to Highway 41, where we will turn right, then left onto Creston Road, which we will follow to Geneseo, where we turn right. We then take Geneseo until it forks and there we continue straight on to Linne Road. At the end of the flat dragstrip section on Linne, it will be right onto Airport Road, then left onto Niblick. We will take Niblick to Creston Road in Paso Robles, where we turn right. We then stay on Creston all the way to the bridge where it becomes 13th, which we take across the bridge and past Park Street to Amsterdam coffee shop. From that point we can figure out which way to go back to Atascadero: River Road, Vine Street, Peachy Canyon or, for those seeking a longer ride, Adelaida Road.

See you Saturday.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THOSE PARTICIPATING AT TINLEY THIS WEEKEND. IF YOU WANT TO AND AREN'T REGISTERED YET CHECK OUT THE NEWS BELOW! ...

Hey fellow Team Kman'ers!

I just won a contest through KSBY and Tineley's triathlon for a free race entry!!! Of course, I have already entered the race (not wanting to decide to do a race the day before!) and they won't refund my money for the race entry! :( But they will let me transfer race entry to anyone of my choosing. So...anyone want to race tomorrow? They said it can be any of the race distances. I just have to be there the morning of the race (tomorrow) with the person to sign up. Let me know if you know of anyone!

Thanks,

Cindy Gilbertson
