Steve Lachaine's Hoodoo ride report:
Saturday Sept 12th. Breakfast = 2 slices of left over pizza at 2am.
voyagers started at 5am. 3 of us remove ourselfs from the pack as we head for Hurricane, UT and the x-pro guy just bolts ahead, we definetely don't want to stay with him. I'm in 3rd place on the road now and that's where I will usually be for the next 200 miles. Mile 83 1st time station Kanab my legs feel great and Voyagers are close together except for a couple of stragglers. An old man talks to me for 10 minutes about crap I don;t care about and I resume to riding. Mile 113 I take my usual water stop at a park on the left. Nobody else stops there but I like it because there is grass and shade for short rest. Heading toward Red Rock Bike Path I notice normal slowing due to elevation gain, now over 7000 feet. My right knee is hurting a little now but only about 10% and I think it is temporary. At this elevation the hills are feeling steeper so I start to realize I should have took a 27 cog to this ride, oh well. It is 90 degrees and I am over 7000 ft up, it must be really hot below. Time station 2 around mile 150 is a Cheveron station. So I buy a Hot Pocket and relax on a bench for 20 minutes. The next 50 miles to TS 3 is faster with tailwind with exception to the steepest climb in the whole race (similar to York Mtn) on the way tp Escalante but then after that hill is a super long down hill all the way to Time Staion 3 in Escalante, this brought my average rolling speed back up to 16.5 mph. Escalante was one of my major rest stops. The knee was hurting about 20% now and I was happy to rest there. I showered , ate, changed clothes, napped, then got ready to ride. I was starting to leave on my bike when I realized the extra battery pack for the light had un-charged over the week after I charged it so I had to borrow a light from someone else because we are not allowed to ride with just 1 front light. So that was a 30 minute delay making my Escalante stop almost 2 hours. I felt great heading for Boulder, 28 miles of tempo riding then I filled 2 bottles from a rusty spigot and headed for the summit, only 3600' to the top of the mountain. I was feeling a little fatiuge but mostly the right knee wanting to bail out of the ride. I still had 2500' elevation to climb and I was starting to walk 2mph up each hill over 4% grade. My left leg could do all the work below 4% grade, the right knee was done for the day. This is the first time this has ever happened so it is just really really bad luck. I put myself in Mt Whitney mode and hiked up the Mtn. All the team vans going by didn't have room to pick my sorry ass up, so eventually 6 hours after I left Escalante I got to coast down to Torry where I layed on some grass at 3am and eventually ended up in the lobby of the Day's Inn trying to rest my knee and get a nap. That's where I thought I was really done but I managed to get up at daylight and ride the 18 miles left to Loa Time Station 4. I got to Loa at 8:28am relieved that I could start the healing process now. Me and another Voyager DNF paid somebody to drive us to St George 250 miles back. We were back in time to watch alot of finishers. I was really sore for 2 days after that. It is Friday now and the knee has no Pain...LaChaine
