•Terry Lentz is doing well after elective back surgery. He is a young and tough brute and was able to manage his pain holistically(by thinking "no pain") so he was able to come home early, to get some rest because, ".....the hospital was so noisy...."

Sunday, November 1, 2009 - 8:00am meet at Santa Rita and Ridge Road in Templeton. (map to start) (map of finish)This Sunday we will be participating in the "Run to Cayucos"(or part way to Cayucos). It is a casual run with no shirt and no prizes. Just lots of friendly faces, camraderie, support from other runners, and a beautiful course to run, walk or bike on. There will be nutritional support out there too. This event is brought to you by the Mooney family. A younger member of the Mooney family would like to ask that you consider a donation to an organization that supports an orphanage in Peru which is very much in need of funds. More information on this organization below... This year's fundraiser is sponsored by Annie Mooney and all proceeds benefits the Chandler Sky Foundation and an orphanage in Peru, Casa de Milagros. Read all about the run at this link. K-Man Cycle & Run will put support out on the course and participants pull together to pick each other up and shuttle each other back to the start.
Whether you would like to participate in the fundraiser(donation of choice at start) or not come join us in the run. It is beautiful and very good company! Please pass on the information to any runners, walkers or cyclists who might want to join us. (It is a nice road to ride a mountain bike on too!)

The "K" went to Mexico last week and visited the Arch that separates the Sea of Cortez from the Pacific ocean (see picture). What a beautiful place to vacation. For another great vaKation spot see the "Steve Robinson Recommends" link in sidebar.

•Saturday Halloween Ride(10/31) -Saturday's Ride: Let's hope we can get a ride in between rain drops and head out to Santa Margarita, 58, Parkhill, Huerohuero and beyond. Leaving Kman at 8 am we will ride south on El Camino to the left by the drive-thru store to Paloma Park etc to Sandoval and back to left on El Camino to Santa Margarita to left on 58 (8.5 mi) to right Parkhill and ascend to Huer Huero (about 20mi). From there folks have some options, to return to descend Las Pilitas and head back to Kman on Pozo road (40ish miles), to descend HH to 58 and either right to O'Donovan to Creston (52 mi Total) or left and home (40ish) or to continue around on Parkhill to Pozo (water at the Firestation) and then head back on Pozo road to the Santa Margarita Lake store for some refreshments. At the store the option is open to head straight back (60ish miles) or to do another climb up Las Pilitas and return by way of Parkhill. Lot's of choices!!
Nov. 14th, members from the Cal Poly Tri. Club are hosting a metric Century leaving from the K-shop in Atown. They are going to coordinate it with our Kman Sat. ride. There will also be members from the UCSB Tri Club joining us. The ride will leave at the normal time, 8am, and will go to wherever Louise tells us to go. Let's show them some KPride. It should be a blast!
Solvang Autumn Double Century Report
I had always wondered why so many riders enjoy doing ultra distance bike events.
I figured that I might find out if I could experience one for myself, and so I committed to entering the Solvang Autumn Double Century a few months ago. Work and family limited my training to just a couple rides a week, but with some longer rides built into my schedule, I was confident that I could finish.
Solvang to Sisquoc - The riders assembled at 6:30am. After roll call (like in school), the starter announced “Have a Great Ride.” And the group started out onto the streets of Solvang in comfortable 55-degree weather. Lots of chatter among the riders, many of whom I learned already knew each other from doing these type of events before. About 20 miles in, the field started to stretch out on the 1000-foot climb up Foxen Canyon Road. This was the last that I saw of LaChaine who ended up as the 4th finisher out of 117 riders. The route then dropped into the first rest stop in Sisquoc at mile 41. Unfortunately for me, the drink options were only Heed (which I don’t care for) and something called Powerbar Sustained Energy, which I found out has a nasty chalky taste. I also ate a couple PB&J sandwiches and grabbed a few energy bars and hit the road.
Sisquoc to 166 - The climb up Tepusquet Rd was long and gradual with a very rewarding and smooth downhill onto Hwy 166, about 17 miles east of Santa Maria. The riders were friendly and I was getting to know some of them. A lot of people were calling me ”K-Man” as I was sporting the team Jersey. The second rest stop was only 23 miles past the first, and I hadn’t even finished the nasty chalk water yet. This was a quick stop – loaded up with some Heed (now the drink of choice) and a few more energy bars.
166 to San Luis Obispo - No major hill climbs in this stretch, but the day was heating up, and with 20 miles until the lunch stop, I was out of Heed and ended up stopping at the Los Berros Market for some Gatorade and Red Bull. This got me to the lunch stop feeling good, although I did not feel like eating lunch when I arrived. I stashed a sandwich into my jersey pocket, filled my water bottles with Coca Cola, and a few more energy bars.
San Luis Obispo to Guadalupe - By now it was about 90 degrees, and we were 110 miles in when the climb up Prefumo Canyon began. My average speed to this point was a respectable 17.1 mph, but the ride from LOVR to the top of Prefumo was only 7 mph which dropped my average ride speed to 16.0mph in only about 4 miles. Near the top, a fixed gear rider passed me like Terry or Scott would on a climb like this, but then in a very non-Terry/Scott sort of way, decided the hill was too steep and got off his bike so that he could walk instead. That was the last I saw of this one and only fixed gear rider. I was caught by several other riders through Pismo Beach as we continued on to Arroyo Grande on hwy 1 -an uneventful stretch, except in Oceano where an apparent drunk driver (who had his arm already in a cast and a cigarette in his mouth) crashed through a concrete lamp post in Oceano right in front of us. Nobody was hurt and we continued on. Again out of fluids, I stopped for Gatorade in Arroyo Grande and then soloed it to Le Roy Park in Guadalupe. I wondered who Le Roy was as I filled my bottles with Heed and grabbed some more energy bars.
Guadalupe to Lompoc - Now 150 miles in, it was the longest ride of my life. I still felt okay, but the legs were definitely tired. Apparently I suffered from a bit of brain-fade as well when at about 30 miles to go I made a wrong turn, and then upon realizing my mistake, decided to shortcut back to the correct road across a dirt field of goathead thorns. Fortunately, I had two extra tubes, but took a long while to fix the two flat tires. It was dark when I rolled into the River Park Campground – the last stop of the ride before the finish. A lot of riders were sitting around eating Cup-o-Noodles and drinking hot chocolate, but I just filled up my bottles with Heed, grabbed some more energy bars, and hit the road for the final 25 miles.
Lompoc to Solvang - It was probably a good thing that I could not see my speedometer in the dark, but I was actually feeling great for this final stretch – a beautiful and quiet rolling country road (Santa Rosa Road) through a remote area between Lompoc and Buellton. I passed several riders through this stretch and caught some more at a red light in Buellton. About six of us finished together as we rode the final four miles in a fast paceline. Folks at the finish were cheerful and friendly, with riders exchanging stories about their day and looking forward to seeing each other again at a future event. A very rewarding feeling of accomplishment was apparent among all the riders. I also now have a better understand of the appeal of this kind of event. In essence, “I get it now.” - Dan VanBeveren's Email
